Travelling to Totality from Outside the Path
The useful question is not which totality town is closest. It is which lawful site the group can reach, use and leave safely under winter conditions.

Choose a region by exact geometry, transport resilience, accommodation, horizon and weather mobility. Treat same-day long-distance travel as a fatigue and congestion problem.
Start from the path, not a famous destination
Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Adelaide and Auckland are outside totality. A traveller needs a confirmed observing coordinate inside the umbra, not merely a booking in a state or island crossed by the path. Check duration and edge margin before comparing routes.
Compare gateways honestly
From eastern Australian cities, inland and coastal New South Wales present different congestion, road and weather trade-offs. Flights can reposition a traveller but do not solve last-mile access. Set a fatigue boundary
Include the waiting period, the drive home, and a second driver or overnight stay in the decision. The rare event does not suspend road rules or make a tired driver safer. State who drives each segment, where the group can stop, and what happens if the preferred site is full. Keep current road alerts and local authority instructions as the final authority close to the event.
